Want to see a funny movie this summer?  Go to “Evan Almighty” with Morgan Freeman playing God.  Seems a bit sacriligious at first glance but it is Hollywierd’s attempt to replicate what made Veggietales successful. A movie meant for kids but appeals to adults as well.  Many moviegoers after watching E.A. will turn to their Bibles to read Genesis 6:14 because that is where Evan Baxter’s “crisis” starts, new congressman in Wash. D.C.  Our greedy politicians are skewered in this movie opposed to the environmentalists and God who are seemingly on the same side. (Actually I’m waiting for “Mr Bean on Holiday” to come out.  I laughed at all his antics in the trailer shown before Evan Almighty. ) Pay careful attention when Morgan Freeman is in a restaurant and his pocket name label reads “Al Mighty.”  Throughout the movie there are clever lines inserted and other cues inserted to make it more fun.  Morgan tells Evan about “Acts of Random Kindness” that spells out ARK which is what Gen. 6:14 is all about.

Speaking of ARK, I thought of something yesterday for those of us who are weightwatching.  We can do many acts of random kindness with our hands such as pick flowers, fruit or vegetables, mail books as gifts to friends or family, write a letter (the kind where you use pen and paper), play the piano, etc. If your hands are busy, they are happy hands!!! Think about “idle hands are the devil’s workshop” or when we have “time on our hands” what do we usually do?  Eat?  All of our actions with our hands seem to go unrecorded whereas advocates of weight loss encourage charts for how many calories we intake OR how many miles we walk.  No charts show what we do with our hands.  What would we do if we didn’t have our hands?  Well, it certainly would be difficult to eat and no chance to do ARK, so we need to be thankful for our hands and maybe think more about what we can do to make others happy by doing acts of service for others.
